Not every statement arrives as a clean digital PDF. Plenty are scanned from paper, faxed between offices, photocopied twice, or photographed on a phone at a kitchen table.
Those are read the same way as any other statement. There is no separate OCR mode to turn on, and no need to tell us which kind you have.
Skew, low contrast and compression artefacts matter far more than whether the file says it is a scan. A straight, evenly lit photograph often converts better than a heavily compressed fax.
Misreading a digit is the characteristic failure of reading from an image. Reconciling the running balance is what turns that from a silent error into a visible one: if a digit were read wrongly, the chain stops matching and the statement is flagged rather than passed.
